  • 7 large Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (loosely packed)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (plus zest from half a lemon)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and prepare the pie crust.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples with sugars, flour, spices, lemon juice, and zest; toss until well coated.
  3. Roll out the bottom crust into a 12-inch circle and place it in a 9-inch pie plate.
  4. Fill with apple mixture and cover with the top crust; seal edges and cut slits for venting.
  5. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle sanding sugar if desired.
