Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • food coloring (optional)
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl: Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; whisk together. In another bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until just combined.
  3. Divide the batter into three bowls. If using food coloring: Add red coloring to one bowl until desired shade is achieved. Add blue coloring to another bowl similarly. Leave the third bowl uncolored for the white layer.
  4. Pour each colored batter into its prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for about 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to cooling racks.
  5. In a mixing bowl: Beat heavy cream until soft peaks form. In another bowl, cream together butter and powdered sugar until smooth. Gently fold whipped cream into butter mixture along with milk and vanilla extract until well combined.
  6. Once cooled: Place one layer on a serving plate; spread icing on top. Add second layer; repeat icing process. Top with third layer; apply thin layer of icing around sides for semi-naked effect.
  7. Slice your beautiful Red White and Blue Cake with Semi-Naked Icing into pieces, serve it up, and watch your guests enjoy!
