Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • food coloring (optional)
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In one bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. In another, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
  3. Divide batter into three portions; color red, white (uncolored), and blue. Pour into prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Cool layers before icing: whip heavy cream separately while creaming butter and powdered sugar in another bowl. Combine milk and vanilla into the butter mixture.
  5. Assemble by layering the cakes with icing in between and lightly coat the sides for a semi-naked look.
