  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts Provides added crunch and nutty flavor to complement the chocolate.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla Enhances the overall sweetness and aroma of the pie.
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell pie shell A store-bought option saves time or make your own for added flair.
  • 1 cup flour For making the pie crust from scratch if desired.
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening Helps achieve a tender, flaky crust texture.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Sweetens the crust slightly, balancing flavors beautifully.
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking powder Adds lightness to the crust, ensuring it doesn’t become dense.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances all the flavors within both the filling and crust.
  • 1/4 cup cold water Used to bring the pie dough together without warming it up.

Method

  1. Step 1: Prepare the Crust - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of vegetable shortening, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1/8 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt until crumbly in texture. Gradually add 1/4 cup of cold water until a dough forms, then roll it out into an unbaked 9-inch pie shell and set aside.
  2. Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients - In another bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of pure cane sugar, and 1/2 cup of pure cane dark brown sugar until well combined.
  3. Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients - In yet another bowl, beat together 2 eggs and stir in 1 cup of melted butter that has been cooled along with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  4. Step 4: Assemble Filling - Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined, then fold in 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts gently.
  5. Step 5: Fill and Bake - Pour the gooey filling into your prepared pie shell evenly before placing it in preheated oven. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until golden brown on top but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  6. Step 6: Cool and Serve - Once baked, remove from oven and let it cool slightly before slicing into generous portions. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
